Introduced by Audemars Piguet in 1991, the Star Wheel revives the wandering-hours display first imagined for 17th-century clocks. Instead of a conventional hour hand, three rotating sapphire discs carry the hour numerals, which travel in turn along a 120° minute scale at the top of the dial. The result is a poetic, instantly readable way of telling the time and one of the most original complications of the modern era. This example is cased in platinum, the rarest metal of the series, and presented on a leather strap in excellent condition.
